Okay, here’s the thing that bothers me the most about Boleska, and it almost has nothing to do with the relationship itself.
It’s that Eska, as a character, literally revolves around Bolin.
Almost everything she says and does relates back to Bolin. Until episode 4 when she asked for Varrick, she had no agency outside of him. She’s only spoken two lines to her brother, she hasn’t interacted or spoken to her own father, she hasn’t spoken ONE WORD to Korra, someone she apparently is supposed to be at odds with - she is literally JUST THERE to be Bolin’s “bizarre love interest.” It’s like the same thing with Mako, in which the entirety of his character predominantly revolves around Korra. But it’s to a much greater extent, almost to the point of it being Eska’s defining trait.
And the thing is, since Bolin has been demoted to shallow comic relief, his love interest isn’t allowed to be complex either. Eska isn’t allowed to have opinions about the oncoming war or what she thinks of Korra. She isn’t allowed to have an engaging relationship with her brother or form an odd friendship with Asami or actively take a role in the plot. She isn’t allowed to be frustrated that someone as spiritually inept as Korra was chosen to be the Avatar - she isn’t allowed to feel like SHE would be better as the Avatar and that she would do her people proud. She isn’t allowed to act or feel anything at all UNLESS it’s about Bolin.
Because Bolin has been deprived of complexity, so has Eska (as well as Desna, who is basically her accessory). She’s “bizarre,” creepy, abusive comic relief that serves absolutely no purpose. Hell, the narrative can’t even take her manipulative behavior seriously, portraying it as another case of “look how stupid and naive Bolin is.” Take her and Desna out and you miss nothing.
This is what saddens me the most about this relationship. Eska could have been great - she could have been a great foil to Korra - she could have been a great addition to the team - she could have been a great antagonist in her own right.
But instead, she’s nothing but a shallow brat with a favorite new toy, and the narrative just won’t take her seriously.
tired of people dismissing my disapproval of korra’s actions as “acting like a regular teen.”
that doesn’t make her any less fucking annoying to me, really. i have plenty of sympathy for her, and yes her reactions are almost typical to that of an average teenage girl. it’s just not so much her acting like a bitch, its just that it seems like shes learned absolutely nothing from last season. she’s every bit as naive and impulsive as she was at the start. i will forever see the ending of season 1 as a cop out. aang fucking took forever to master the avatar state, and he was spiritual as fuck. if anything, as a hormonal teenage girl, i would have expected her to have a fucking nightmare trying to control it. i expected her to lose her shit and go nuts more often than aang did and just tear shit apart. but nah she just cries over a cliff long enough for everyone to think she’s gonna jump off of it, then aangs ghost comes out of nowhere like, “lol here’s your bending back, oh and i’ll throw in the avatar state as a bonus.” dont get me started on how she went from being unable to make so much as a breeze one episode to bending up a hurricane the next. like really? they just spent an entire season stressing how absolutely important spiritualism is for airbending. korra couldnt do it cause she was brash, aggressive, and impulsive. it made perfect sense. but nah, amon takes away your other elements so POOF YOU HAVE AIRBENDING NOW WITH ABSOLUTELY NO EXPLANATION AS TO WHY.
why the fuck was it so easy? like idk. aang just poofed it onto her. if the past avatar could just bestow the avatar state to the incumbent, then why the fuck didnt roku do the same thing instead of going, “DAMMIT AANG YOU HAVE ONE YEAR TO LEARN MASTER ALL FOUR ELEMENTS PLUS THE AVATAR STATE OR THE WORLD WILL BECOME A SMOLDERING PILE OF ASH.”
aang does shit the proper way and he only had a fucking year, maybe even less. it forces him to grow up quickly and by the end of the show hes wise way beyond his 12 years of biological life.
AANG FUCKING JUST GIFT WRAPPED KORRA THE MOST POWERFUL ASPECT OF BEING AN AVATAR ALONG WITH FIXING HER GREATEST WEAKNESS, HER INABILITY TO AIRBEND, YET SHE DOESNT HAVE ANY GROWTH AS A CHARACTER TO SHOW FOR IT.
honestly just watching season two for more of tenzin and his family; everyone in that family is fucking awesome. also the avatars origins. and korras mom’s voice, which is very, very sexy.
